Expanding Discovery in Economics+ has moved to a new home at Chicago Booth. The program was founded in 2021 by the to identify and support talented undergraduate students from all backgrounds who are interested in the study of economics.

Under the direction of Pietro Veronesi, EDE+ will continue to fulfill its mission of expanding opportunities for students interested in rigorous research career paths in economics and related fields.

“As we transition to our new home at Chicago Booth, we are excited to expand EDE+ to foster research careers in a broader set of quantitative social sciences,” says Veronesi, the Sherman and Vivian Chao Distinguished Service Professor of Finance and deputy dean for faculty. Veronesi is also a cofounder of (PREDOC), a consortium of universities and research institutions that aims to remove the barriers to access to research careers, including asymmetries of information, education, credentialing, and affordability.

As part of Booth, EDE+ will be able to leverage faculty expertise and resources and broaden its reach, he says. “Booth’s commitment to world-class interdisciplinary research and diverse perspectives makes it the ideal partner for EDE+ as we continue to empower the next generation of scholars and leaders.”

EDE+ will preserve its strong partnerships with BFI and the Hutchins Center for Fiscal and Monetary Policy at the Brookings Institution. BFI will continue to support the program’s mission, with Quentin Johnson staying on as EDE+ program director to guide vision and outreach. The Hutchins Center will host a week of immersive programming in Washington, DC, where participants will gain exposure to important economic policies, explore the critical role of research in shaping them, and meet with policy leaders.

Key Program Enhancements

The 2025 EDE+ Summer Institute will feature a combination of full- and part-time programming, as well as a blend of in-person and online engagement, starting with a full-time weeklong virtual boot camp. Two weeks of in-residence programming will follow: the week in Washington with the Hutchins Center, and an additional week in Chicago at Booth.

These immersive experiences will lead into six weeks of part-time, synchronous, online evening programming designed to guide participants through the research process, culminating in a research project and presentation. Participants will be invited to present their findings at a research and networking conference in Washington, DC, hosted by PREDOC. The program will also help participants explore opportunities to gain publishing credit for individually written data narratives completed during the program.

EDE+ will continue to concentrate on economics and its analytical tools and frameworks for addressing complex social challenges. Participants include students who are interested in economics, as well as those considering complementary fields in the quantitative social sciences such as business, finance, sociology, political science, and data science.
